Is He Rich Like Me?

Yes, the Red Sox beat the Yankees yesterday. And as I write this, the Red Sox are winning big again. But who are they kidding? There is no way they are going to beat the Yankees, either now or in the playoffs. They are so battered by the Yankees that they can't even imagine beating them in a crucial game.

After losing a one run 8th inning lead and then the game on Friday (and effectively ending any chance Boston had of finishing ahead of the Yankees for the first time since 1995), this is what Pedro Martinez had to say, ""I just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy. I wish they would disappear. I wish they would disappear and never come back. I'd like to face any other team right now. To pitch a good game, make good pitches and I still can't beat them, it's frustrating."

Pedro used to be much less respectful of his Daddy.

Johnny Damon said, "I would rather not face the Yankees in the A.L.C.S. so we don't have that Red Sox-Yankee thing going."

Translation: "I would rather not face the Yankees in the A.L.C.S so we don't have that we can't beat the Yankees thing going."

And the lamest comment of them all? Terry Francona said that he didn't take Pedro out to start the 8th inning on Friday because he thought Pedro could get through the inning. Ok, fair enough, but why not take him out after Pedro immediately gave up a game tying homerun to Hideki Matsui that tied the score? Francona's response, "If I run out there after two pitches, it would make it look like I wasn't making a very good decision before the inning." What? It would make you look bad? If he thought he should have taken him out, he should have taken him out. Admit the mistake and try to win the game. Instead, he left him in the game and Pedro imploded. Typical Red Sox.

I actually think the Red Sox are better than the Yankees, but for whatever reason they can't beat them when it really matters. As much as I would like to see a Red Sox- Yankees ALCS, I know that that will mean another Yankees World Series appearance and I don't have the stomach for that possibility.
