Checks and Balances for 3rd Graders

Yes, my writing is that bad. Yes, I was trying to make things as simple as possible. No, I didn't really plan ahead of time what I wanted to say. And for the record, I didn't mean to put freedom of the press in the executive branch- that is just where I had space on the board when I was talking about it. However, for most of Bush's administration, the press might as well have been part of Bush's cabinet.

I will buy a free beer to whoever can best decipher what this improptu lesson was about.

Dan, Chris' dad (the 6th grade history teacher and history buff) and I have been pondering over your board. His best guess is "checks and balances" and you used Nixon and Watergate as an example of how it broke down or sometimes doesn't work as well as it was meant to. You brought in the role that the media played in uncovering the cover-up. Bork was an example of the congressional check of the executives decision on a Supreme Court nominee. The two senators from NY was just an informative side trip. So, do we get a beer??

Dan, I think we have a winner.
Dor, you just explained this using almost exactly the same language that Dan used to explain it to me when I stumbled upon it in his classroom. Meanwhile my class were writing about their summer vacation (though some did spend their summer months capaigniong in Ohio and Penn).

"The President and His People" were one of the myriad of side projects undertaken by the various members of George Clinton's Parliament in the early to mid seventies. Their seminal album, "Checks and Balances" (featuring a cameo from Clyde Stubblefield on drums and congas)is what I believe your cryptic white board refers to. Essential track: "Funk March on K Street (Veteran's Daze)."

is recess from 10:00 to 10:30? or perhaps you're teaching the kids how to set their VCRs to begin and end recording with an extra minute built in so as not to miss the beginning or end of their program.

i think i owe the lawrences a beer next time i'm in md for getting the answer correctly.

weasel, i owe you a beer for the amount of laughing your post caused me. next time, i'm in maine, the first round is on me.

jamie, um... i'll see you this weekend?

the 9:59- 10:31 thing was an attempt to describe what the missing minutes on nixon's tapes were like. i told them a hypothetical story about how the kids in my class complained in my class about how i took away a 30 minute recess time from them just because i was in a bad mood. then when parents asked me abou it, i said that that wasn't true. however, one child told his parent that he knew that i videotaped everything that went in in the classroom everyday. then the director of the school forced me to hand over the tape, but somehow on the day in question, 30 minutes had been mysteriously erased. hmmmm... i wonder if that 30 minute period in question included evidence against me.

I have a question for the assembled editors: how does one buy a free beer?

Still, I'm not fussy. Cheers Dan, mine will be a pint of Shipyard. Lovely job.

Of course, by "editors" I meant "educators". Not hard to see where my mind lies as a semi-retired Maine media maven. Not a patch on you chalky fingered angels...
