Hype vs. Real Brilliance

Is it possible for Arcade Fire to get any more favorable press? I've been reading all about how this band is the best new thing since the Beatles. I've heard good things from everyone who has heard them- except for Youthlarge. So I finally bought the damn thing and I've got to say that I'm less than impressed. That being said there are many bands who I love that I didn't particularly like the first time I heard them so maybe this band will grow on me. But I just don't see what the hype is about based on one listen.

Now the same thing can not be said for the Neko Case live album I also just listened to for the first time. Holy shit, she's great! I saw her perform with the Sadies this summer at Southpaw and loved it. This new cd features the Sadies and Neko together from a number of shows early in 2004. Most of the songs are covers and they are great- Loretta Lynn, The Shangri-las, and tons from Buffy St. Marie. Oh Neko.

Neko Case is splendid (and also ever so slightly insane). As you like Neko and if you have yet to pick it up might I suggest the Jack White produced Loretta Lynn long player, "Van Lear Rose"? Ol' Jack has done for Loretta what Rubin did for Cash.

On your say so I shall avoid Arcade Fire like a red stater avoids anal.

Caveat to last comment: Like a red stater avoids anal among his own species

Although Van Leer Rose has its moments and Loretta Lynn is a legend, Jack White should be flogged for spewing his ego all over Loretta like a Bucocki money shot. Def not a Rubin situation.

Hello- is this the new singles chat room "Northeastern Liberals Who Like Debating Goat Roping Music?".

I like that Loretta Lynn/Jack White thing (although he does inspire some animosity, doesn't he?) but then again I thought that Phantom Planet would be huge, so I'm hardly an authority on this.

Nice post, Dan

i'm sick of the arcade fire and i've never heard them.
critics shmitics. cannibalization masturbation.
a friend was so impressed by van lear rose he burned me acopy and dropped it off at my house without telling me. i found this unmarked cd and put it in my player and was horribly disappointed by the album. i almost didn't make it through the whole thing. the spoken word track is abominable. ugh.

while in louisville i spent a lot of time driving around in circles. that arcade fire disc was one i purchased on the trip and shuffled in and out of the cd player. i felt weird buying it - like it was too buzzworthy - i even shrugged when i bought it, half apologizing to the guy behind the counter.

i listened to it heavily over the course of two or three days and i really got into four or five tracks, the rest felt sort of bland. the hype was so huge that of course one's expectations weren't going to be met. give it a few more weeks dan and please report to us again on whether or not it grew on you.

ptoo. i don't understand why everyone is so gaga over this band. i've listened to the cd enough now that i can honestly say there is nothing too extraordinary about it. i don't even like it a bit. maybe if i was 22 years old, straight out of nyu, working in the music bee-az as some sort of assistant to an assistant, going to spin magazine parties drinking free vodka du jour drinks and smoky rock shows shows everynight i would think differently...nah, i'd still think it sucks.

bbmp- perhaps you don't like it because it reminds you of being "22 years old, straight out of nyu, working in the music bee-az as some sort of assistant to an assistant, going to spin magazine parties drinking free vodka du jour drinks and smoky rock shows shows everynight"?

and perhaps i like it because it makes me think that i still have the chance to wind back the clock eight years and be 22, straight outta' some mid-atlantic college, living in queens, working in the film bee-az with some made up title, going to lame festival parties wishing they had free bourbon but instead settling for free apple martinis?

nah, i don't like it cause it's just not good. someone played it at work again today and again i thought, "hmmm, not so much."

shmoo,
if you like bob dylan, you should really listen to bright eyes! all the 22 year old spin assistants (and the ny times) say that bright eyes is the new dylan!
