When is Obama going to run for president? We need a dynamic new kind of leader and my money is on him. And I'm completely astounded that he is only the third African-American to join the Senate since Reconstruction. That is utterly disgusting.
I try to understand.
I understand why some Christians vote the way that they do. I understand that many bigots hate gays. I understand that many people don't give a shit about the poor. I understand that many people are racists. I understand that many people only want rich woman to get safe abortions and want to force the rest of the country to back alleys and coat hanger solutions. I understand that many people are willing to give up other people's rights to privacy because, hell, they're not an A-Rab so who gives a hoot? I understand that some people just must own a gun to defend themselves from, um, the British? I understand that many people don't like the French and that John Kerry is on the "far left bank." I understand that most people don't care about the "enemy combatants" who are being held without even being told what they are being charged with- those fuckers shouldn't even have been fighting against us. U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!
But what I don't remotely understand is how people can overlook the lies told to us by the current administration that there is a link between 9/11 and Iraq, the WMD fiasco, etc. etc. I don't understand how people can attack Kerry for fighting for our country but give Bush (Um, National Guard service right?) and Cheney (I had other priorities at the time) a free pass on the hypocrisy. Now I know that they weren't officially the face of the Swift Boat Veterans bullshit but we all know that they condoned and even encouraged it. I don't understand why people aren't disturbed by the current administration's attempt to block the 9/11 commission. I don't understand how good Christians can vote against Kerry because Paul tells them in the Bible that sodomy is bad, but overlook Bush's callousness and arrogance in killing tens of thousands of people. Is that an example of good Christian behavior. I don't understand how people can look at the current situation in Iraq and think that things are going well just because the administration tells us so. What would Jesus do? He sure as hell wouldn't act as Bush has. I just don't understand.

Unfortunately, the answer is yes.

Sujan does her best Lyndie England with the White Castle feast.

Glen laments the bad news, but enjoys his first White Castle experience.

Jim sees red.

No champagne this year.

I have never been so embarrassed to be an American. We are the laughingstock of the world. Nice job, red states.

you said it! i am fully ready to renounce my US citizenship. i'm tired of trying to understand - it's just not possible.
Arrogance for all the wrong reasons - I agree with you. It's amazing how the Bush campaign is able to both expose and exploit the stupidity of Americans.
Please see my comments under the Nader posting. Sorry, meant to put it under this one! chrislarry's mom
Yes, I am finally able to get onto the comment section!
Dan, bravo on your posting, it is great. I am seriously ashamed of our ignorant country (or the Midwest and Southern section of it), and ashamed to be an American. During the four months that I lived in London, I was ashamed to open my mouth because of the fear that I would be grouped in as one of the ignorant Americans. On the news this morning, it said that 70% of Europeans were for Kerry. Why is Europe so much smarter than America? I am ready to get out of this country, where I don't agree with any of the policies of the current administration. I'm ready to move to a more liberal country, without the hypocrisy, bigotry, homophobia, and utter ridiculousness of the current administration. In 7 months, when I graduate from college, I am ready to get the hell out of here. Canada or Europe--here I come!!!!
Oh yea, and the last comment was by Amy.
You could also look at the Jewish vote, especially in Florida, which did not vote Democratic in the numbers they would normally because of their belief that Bush in the White House means a more secure Israel.
You could also riducule the young voters, especially in Ohio, who really had a chance to make a difference. 1 in 10 eligible voters between 18 - 24 actually showed up? I guess they chose to die instead of vote?
It's not just all about hatred (although you seem to be spewing quite a bit of it yourself) for anything non-white and non-christian. Bush closed the vote margin in many of the counties that Gore won in 2000 and Kerry won yesterday. It seems reasonable that many people who voted for Gore in 2000 voted for Bush in 2004. Did they all of a sudden turn bigot? Or might there be other issues that they felt were more importance? I don't know. I'm not trying to be contrary. I'm seriously wondering.
Also the US is hardly a laughing stock of the world. We are what we are. There is alot of country in between New York and Los Angelos and you just can't write those people off as racists and expect to be taken seroiusly by objective people looking for real solutions. No other country in the world is anywhere near us in terms of diversity in culture and thought.
Hey Dan
Stop beating around the BUSH (pardon the pun) and say what's really on your mind
hey anonymous,
you bring up some good points. i wish that you wouldn't hide behind a wall of anonymity though.
and you bring up good points as well.
but blaming small blocs of voters in certain states isn't the issue, in my mind. the issue is the 58 million voters who think bush is the answer. of course, some people voted for bush this time that voted for gore last time and i don't know why. obviously not everyone is a bigot or racist but i'd be willing to bet that the more close minded of us live overall in the red states. our country is known for tolerance and diversity in certain places. but mississippi? georgia? arizona? really?
and if our country is so tolerant, how do you explain the gay marriage issue being trashed in the states where it was on the ballot? how do you explain that obama is only the 3rd african-american to be elected to the senate since 1877? wow, now you're getting me riled up, anonymous. we are not the envy of the world anymore. get real.
> There is alot of country in between New York and Los Angelos and you just can't write those people off as racists and expect to be taken seroiusly by objective people looking for real solutions.
yeah, and i say let them secede! or we should! i'm not saying that they are all bigots and racists, but the first step for real solutions that should have been taken by objective people was to vote bush out of office. and they didn't. so i have no idea how people think and that is what this post was about. this election is going to affect our country for the next 20 or 30 years. and if ou don't think we're being laughed at around the world, you should read some national papers or do some traveling to inquire. or i guess you might not want to read the papers because of the liberal bias.
sigh, one more.
i shouldn't have read your comment so early in the morning.
what i was trying to say is that i understand (and yes disagree with) why so many people would want to vote for bush on the social issues. but to vote for bush because of his wild successes in iraq and the fact that he makes us "safer" boggles my mind.
okay, okay.
the reading of the papers and traveling was a bit ridiculous, especially when i reread your original comment. plus, if you are who i think you might be then that comment makes no sense. give me a break, it is early in the morning.
i quit for now. someone else post.
while it is depressing that half the voters picked bush after he pissed in our faces for 4 years, half the voters picked not-bush, so while this election is horribly depressing at least half the people are with you/us. the sides are nearly even, so let's start a culture war.
i heard yesterday that Obama is in favor of pro-active carpet bombing of Iran. that's pretty fucking dynamic.
my favorite favorite bumper sticker of the elections season: "who would jesus bomb?"
and that last comment was from jeremy, damn this anonymous posting shit.
well we're definitely the laughing stock of north korea!
obama says to carpet bomb iran? are you serious? shit, maybe i need to rethink my support. what's ralph nader up to these days?
"We cannot continue in this paralyzing mistrust. If we want to work our way out of the desperate situation in which we find ourselves another spirit must enter into the people….The awareness that we are all human beings together has become lost in war and through politics. We have reached the point of regarding each other only as members of a people either allied with us or against us. Now we must rediscover the fact that we – all together – are human beings, and we must strive to concede to each other what moral capacity we have. Only in this way can we begin to believe that in other peoples as well as in ourselves there will arise the need for a new spirit…."
Albert Schweitzer, 1958.
Yesterday, in Bush's acceptance speech, he said that America has spoken and, unfortunately, he is right. Since we are still a part of that same America that spoke on Tuesday, we have to hear all the voices that speak, really learn what motivates what they are saying, not make sweeping over-generalizations about who they are, and then plan, organize, mobilize, and act.
and anonymous, what do you suggest? of course, i'm making sweeping generalizations. but our country has taken a major step backward and how are going to change that in the immediate future?
i have to share this paragraph from today's Times, written by Maureen Dowd:
"Jim DeMint, the new senator from South Carolina, said during his campaign that he suppored a state GOP platform plan banning gays from teaching in public schools. He explained, 'I would have given the same answer when asked if a single woman who was pregnant and lving with her boyfriend should be hired to teach my third-grade children.'"
jeremy says:
well maybe carpet bombing is a bit extreme, but here is some more info on obama from ZNet Blog (http://blog.zmag.org/index.php/weblog/entry/american_power1)
"Iran announced on Tuesday [Sept. 21] that it has begun converting tons of uranium into gas, a crucial step in making fuel for a nuclear reactor or a nuclear bomb. The International Atomic Energy Agency has called for Iran to suspend all such activities.
Obama said the United States must first address Iran’s attempt to gain nuclear capabilities by going before the United Nations Security Council and lobbying the international community to apply more pressure on Iran to cease nuclear activities. That pressure should come in the form of economic sanctions, he said.
But if those measures fall short, the United States should not rule out military strikes to destroy nuclear production sites in Iran, Obama said.
and later-
"'In light of the fact that we’re now in Iraq, with all the problems in terms of perceptions about America that have been created, us launching some missile strikes into Iran is not the optimal position for us to be in,' he said.
'On the other hand, having a radical Muslim theocracy in possession of nuclear weapons is worse. So I guess my instinct would be to err on not having those weapons in the possession of the ruling clerics of Iran. ... And I hope it doesn’t get to that point. But realistically, as I watch how this thing has evolved, I’d be surprised if Iran blinked at this point.'"
1. What would Jesus bomb? nothing, leave Him out of it
2. But since He was mentioned let me say that any politician who believes that gays and single moms should not be teaching is a moron. As an evangelical Christian ...yes a born againer I am offended that men/women who claim to have morals and claim to be Christians have no love for their fellow human beings. Agree or not agree with their lifestyle ...we are all God's children. Taking away their jobs? What next? what would Jesus do? He would love ...no matter what. Cheesy but I believe this to be true
debbie,
of course jesus wouldn't bomb anyone, that is my point. people are so blinded by bush's talk of faith that they fail to realize how unchristian his actions are!
oh.
okay.
nevermind.
