Global Warming?

On Friday, I was discussing the most recent issue of Time for Kids with my class that had an article about global warming in it.

We talked about what that meant. The kids seemed very concerned about it and wanted to know what could be done. I responded that there were things that could be done but not everybody agreed that this is even something we should be worrying about.

I asked the class what they thought George Bush's opinion on it was. Math Superstar raised her hand and answered, "He doesn't believe it is a problem and doesn't want to do anything." I asked her if she knew this was true or if she was merely guessing. She responded, "I was just guessing." I said, "You seem very sure of your answer though." She said, "Well, pretty much everything I believe, George Bush believes the exact opposite thing."

Tough life lessons by the age of eight.

the sad fact of the matter is that at this point, it's pretty much too late to do anything about global warming. even the goals of the Kyoto Protocol won't prevent us form seeing the results of decades of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 50-100 years.

that's not to say that we shoudn't be doing things to lessen the effects, but we're too deep into the fossil fuel economy at this point to change things rapidly enough to mitigate the damage that's already been done.

that is EXACTLY what i told them.

and then i told them all the money they have helped raise for hurricane katrina victims won't really do anything to change the poverty in our country.

and then i kicked each one in the stomach and told them there was no santa claus either.

good for you! that's the problem with America today - these damn kids are coddled too much. a stiff dose of reality is what they need. and a job in a coal mine. gotta keep them power plants humming along!
