Odds and Ends

1. Thanks to a recommendation from Dave, I've recently started watching Off to War on the Discovery/Times Channel. The ten episode series follows one National Guard unit from Arkansas from the moment it gets calls up through its deployment in Iraq. I've only watched one episode so far but it was fascinating. If nothing else, I've found a newfound "appreciation" for that Lee Greenwood song. The show is on like three times a day so it isn't too late to start with the first episode. Check the schedule.

2. Yesterday I was reminded about one of my favorite quotes of 2005. Apparently at the Christmas party I went to, the Mexican boyfriend of a cousin of a friend left after a couple of hours and apparently uttered the phrase, "I have a two hour limit at Gringo parties." Shit, I might have to start using that excuse when I leave a gathering.

3. I haven't watched a Redskins games in years. I lost interest in watching football upon moving to New York. But when Chris called me yesterday to invite Youthlarge and me over for some playoff action, who was I to say no? I know Chris is annoyed with me since I turned my back on rooting for the Redskins after rooting for them my entire life leading up to 1997. I'm a traitor to Redskins Nation. It is almost like Orthodox Jews having much less respect for lapsed Jews like myself than they would for a non-Jew. Shit, I'm glad I don't know any Orthodox Redskin fans. However, I guess I never really stopped rooting for the Redskins, I just stopped watching football.

But Chris loves everybody. He invited many people over and gave some of us (me at least) rules. The rules were that we watched the game and didn't start inane conversations.

It was a lot of fun watching the game with Chris. He really gets into it. I took many short movies of him during key moments of the game.

A picture of me from my days of being a Redskins fan. Notice all the helmets, football cards, etc. This picture was taken at my grandparents' house before the Wild Card game against the Rams in the 86-87 season.
