And I still have never sent a text message. Don't get me wrong, I dig receiving them. But, as of yet, I have resisted learning how to send one. I'm sure it isn't hard to do but why bother?
Who knows though? Maybe 2007 will be the year. In the meantime, keep sending them to me. Just don't expect a reply as a text message.
I was contemplating writing this post in that crazy "text message" abbreviated language that all of the kids are so crazy about, but, alas, I don't even know that aspect of the whole text message thing. Do I need to learn it before I start texting or can I simply wing it?

I lost my virginity this year, although I must admit that I HATE typing on the tiny keypad. My thumbs were not made for this type of activity.
I hate talking on the phone, so I love the text message.
But I use real English when doing it, even when it's a PITA (that would be Pain In The Ass).
Don't bother with the text messaging unless you get a Blackberry. At least that raiss it to the level of hand-held video game instead of alphabetic-torture. I hate everything about cellphones. They are a necessary evil, I guess.
TM are cool for avoiding phonecalls, trouble is, people know that a TM is a phonecall avoided. Does this make sense? If you use email there is really no philosophical excuse for avoiding TM.
bill,
i hate the phone too so i see how text messages can cut the 10 second phone calls to set up plans in half by reading it. but it would take me a minute to send a text message so i'd rather call.
mondale,
i disagree with your logic. with e-mail you can only respond when you are by a computer. that is what used to be nice about the phone - you couldn't always be reached. with text messages, it is just another layer of always being available. plus as the noiseboy said, the keypad is too small to be comfortable. so maybe mactechwitch is right - i'll just get a blackberry.
Not too long ago you were having a hard time giving up your cassette player now you want a blackberry!
I've never sent a text message and I hate cell phones too. I hate how loud people get and having to hear their stupid conversations.
i'm not really getting a blackberry but i might send one or two text messages in 2007. might.
Norris, What I meant was that there's no reason to shun TM if you already use email, to me it's all just degrees of the same type of communication. I agree with the 100% contactability thing which is why i rarely answer my phone or even turn it on. Having said all that i'm not anti TM or email or even the phone, just when I'm in the mood. Am I sounding as cantankerous as I feel?
Anyway listmaker, whatever you choose to do in '07 i wish U GR8 luck
apologies, that should have been a response to Listmaker, not Norris.
Cell phones, texting: bah humbug. What on earth can be so compelling that it has to be communicated that instant via thumb yoga, rather than held in mental storage until you meet (or write) your intended correspondent? Is the act of texting OMG I just saw George Clooney coming out of Supercuts preferable to sitting down later with pals/spouse/colleagues/SO and saying "I saw whatshisname from Oceans 11 at the barber's this morning"?
This fetish for always on communication and the instantaneous is going to turn us into goldfish, I tell ya. In 50 years, nobody will have any memory capacity to speak of whatsoever.
Texting is the bomb....but I got a cell with full flip keypad, b/c I hate the number pad......i love texting! Talking on the phone is lame...
so chris,
is replying to e-mails lame as well because you never do that either.
chris is right. texting is the bomb. it's perfect for quick messages. df and i use it all the time for quick communications when the other person is in class or a meeting like "i'm going home now" or "meet me at the blind pig at 7." it's also good for planbreaking-- no way to get convinced to come out for a drink when texting.
i hate it all. bring back the letter!
Give it 6 to 9 months and I bet they'll have come up with verbal texting, where you speak your message into your phone and it is sent as text. They have to do something to break the tyranny of the thumb, especially if they are ever going to crack the increasingly arthritic boomer market.
Did you not see the article ion the NY Times...or maybe it Was Post....Email is for old people, and I am and will always be a teenager.....
but my work email now will get a quicker response: clawrence@nyscience.org...
Letters? Blah luddite! Letters are always and will ever be lame. Nostalgia is for losers...
I also hate to talk on the phone and love to text. For someone who is not at all famous, I really covet my privacy, so hate answering the phone. I let most calls go straight to voicemail, but if someone sends me an SMS, I respond almost immediately. I hate when I send someone a text and then they CALL me back. Oh, and like Mr. Norris, I never use texting shorthand. I have no intention of making plans 4 2nite.
lol. chris U R lame. letters rule. TTYL.
Does TTYL stand for 'tough titties, youthlarge'?
Today someone taught me MOS - mom over shoulder - especially handy for the 13 and under set.
Or if your mother is a drunkard and you have to carry her home a lot.
Weasel you're too funny!!!LOL
i can't believe this is the 22nd comment on this post. let's try for 100!
clc - TTYL does not stand for tough titties, though i wish it did.
TTYLLYLTYT
