A few months ago, the curriculum called for a lesson on the rise of trade unions in our country as part of the study of the Lower East Side.
From there, I played my class a few songs including There is Power in a Union, Blowin' in the Wind, Fortunate Son, and parts of 911 is a Joke. I gave the class a copy of the lyrics and we discussed what they thought the songs were about.
Then I had each student write their own protest song. I taught them how to use Garage Band and each kid recorded their own song.
I meant to post these back in February, but better late than never, I suppose.

Snap, these kids are self-involved...did any write songs about larger issues? My least favorite is I Hate This Assignment....the assignment is cool kid...jeesh!
My faves are the ones about bedtime.
the "i hate this assignment" kid didn't want to have his voice recorded because he gets too self-conscious.
i encourage them to write songs about things that frustrated them about being kids, not really about the larger world issues.
This was so funny! I especially like My Life as a Kid and Bed is Too Early. It is Not Educational also had some pretty great moments. I think my overall #1 is Bed is Too Early though.
