Chocolate Chip Pancakes Will Never Taste the Same

I took the boys to Tom's Restaurant for the first time today. It was fine. But it is clearly a different place now that Gus has retired. His nephew now runs the place. He actually seems super nice if this post is correct. But he was not the person who seated us. The man who did had a much different reaction than Gus would have. When he saw the boys and me, he didn't see cute babies. He saw a bit of a hassle. He found a spot for us but it just wasn't a Gus moment. Gus would have fawned over the babies. And he would have kept coming back to the table to check in.

I am optimistic about the future though. Gus's nephew Jim definitely has a young Gus vibe to him. On my way out, he noticed the babies for the first time and insisted I take a lollipop to save for them. He has a hard act to follow though but maybe he can be Yaz to Gus's Ted Williams. I hope he doesn't turn out to be Mike Greenwell. I wonder what Tom was like. Maybe he was Ted Williams, Gus was Yaz, and now Jim will be Jim Rice? Hall of Famers, all.

I'm glad that I got 10 years of seeing Gus piloting the ship. It is the end of an era. Sometimes change is not welcome. Although now they will be open on Sundays so that is a good thing I suppose.

This article has more information. I love that Tom says he's going to spend some time traveling. I remember talking to him one time and he told me that he had never left Brooklyn because what was the point - everything a person could ever need was right here.

Gus, you will be missed.

The picture is from my 35th birthday. Check out the post to see Gus kiss me on the forehead!

Sad to see that Gus has moved on and the godless heathens have moved in to serve food on sundays and grumble at infants. sorry to hear about your recent bad run-ins with people and their baby issues. people are weird. babies are weirder.

Adam and I were just talking about this place today--every time we have tried to go to Tom's (THREE different times) it has been closed, and we have been forced to go to the mean next-door establishment, Cafe Shane. We like to yell, "Good food takes a long time! Stop complaining! Cafe Shane!" (Cafe Shane has a lot of strangely aggressive signs all over.)

@youthlarge probably! I think there were different weird things each time--like once they were closed all of August or somethign.
