I Don't Care, I Care, I Really Don't Care

Other than SHR, Marc, and me, it seems that no one else was disappointed by the recent Pavement shows. They were okay but nothing special. They didn't sound spectacular like the Pixies. They didn't excite me like Superchunk on their recent performance on Jimmy Fallon. Obviously the key difference is that Superchunk is touring behind a new album and Pavement is simply cashing in. And it's not like Pavement ever really cared about their live shows anyway. But why did everything sound so damn slow?

Check out this clip from Colbert. Why did they have to slow down a perfect song and make it not nearly as good?

They were a little bit better on Fallon where they did Unfair but still not great.

I saw them twice in three nights. The Central Park show was a little bit better because the sound was better. And the sets were great both nights for the most part. But overall, I was just kind of blah about the whole thing.

On the other hand, check out Superchunk. They were great despite how weird John Darnielle was on stage with them.

Or perhaps this is a better comparison since this is an old song played by people who care.

Then again, maybe it isn't Pavement's fault. It seems like I'm just not that into reunion shows in general?

i saw pavement once live and was totally disappointed so i had zero interest in this reunion. i have no interest in reunions simply for tours anyway and found steve's laconic attitude on colbert telling about his energy behind this nonsense. i've been digging reading about spiral's meltdown at the matador at 21 shows. stve's got a good thing going with the jicks and needs to get back on that horse. i said it once about scott kannberg and i'll say it again, "i'm giving that clown any of my money."

was it just me or did it seem that john darnielle didn't really know the lyrics to the tune he was pogoing to?

You nailed it, Dan. Pavement never seemed to care about their live show; Superchunk has always been all about its live show. It shows. And I'm not sad I missed the Pavement reunion, either. I saw 'em play Lolla back in the day and was underwhelmed. They're still one of my favorite bands and will always be -- at least on record. But I'd much rather watch Superchunk play live.
